What You Need to Know
As a parent, there are a few
things you need to know regarding the health issues
of your children. Two of the most common STI’s/STD’s
(Sexually Transmitted Infections/Diseases) can
cause long term consequences for girls: Chlymidia
if left untreated, can cause PID (Pelvic Inflammatory
Disease) which can lead to infertility. Infertility
rates are expected to increase in the future because
of this STI. Chlymidia is curable (since it is
a bacterial infection) with antibiotics. HPV
(Human Papilloma Virus)
is another STD that can cause cervical cancer
in women. There is a vaccine (called Gardasil);
it is recommended for girls 9-26 years of age.
At the Weber-Morgan Health Department (WMHD),
9-18 year olds can receive the vaccine (a series
of 3 shots) at $10 per shot if they don’t
have insurance, are on Medicaid, are American
Indian/Alaskan Eskimo, or their specific insurance
does not cover it. (The WMHD can bill IHC and
PEHP insurances; other insurances need to go to
their private physician).
Currently, 19-26 year olds can also
receive the vaccine for $10 per shot (series of
3 shots) if they have no medical insurance, or
their insurance does not cover the vaccine. The
WMHD can bill Medicaid, IHC, and PEHP for the
vaccine.
Shots normally cost $135 each,
so it is beneficial to take advantage of this
opportunity while it exists.
To schedule an appointment, call the Weber-Morgan
Health Department at (801)399-7250.
